FBX

FBX (Filmbox) is a proprietary file format. It was developed by Autodesk and is widely used in the film, video game, and architectural visualization industries.

It allows for 3D models, animations, and other data to be exchanged between different applications and systems:

  • 3D models: FBX supports the exchange of 3D models, including meshes, textures, and materials.
  • Animations: FBX supports the exchange of animations, including keyframe animations and physics simulations.
  • Lights and cameras: FBX supports the exchange of lights and cameras, allowing for the recreation of complex lighting and camera setups.

FBX has several features that make it the chosen one for exchanging 3D data but comes with limitations:

  • Proprietary: FBX is a proprietary format owned by Autodesk, which can limit its adoption and compatibility with certain applications and systems.
  • Limited data types: FBX has limited support for certain data types, such as physics simulations and dynamic simulations.
